Description

Banhez Cuishe is produced in limited quantities using maguey Cuishe (agave Karwinskii) by Luis and Donaciano Pacheco in La Noria, Ejutla, Oaxaca. It was fermented with natural yeasts for 5-6 days and distilled in copper pots. This mezcal has tropical fruit and herbaceous notes.

Banhez Mezcal is a cooperative comprised of 35+ families in the tiny village of San Miguel Ejutla in the central valley of Oaxaca. The Banhez Mezcal co-op is committed to sustainable, fair trade mezcal production the same way it’s been done by their ancestors for nearly two centuries. The Banhez Ensamble is made by the collective and the brand also has single agave varietals produced by a single mezcalero from the co-op.

jmehrk35: 'Slight warming, if not neutral initial nasal impact. Aroma is very bold on tropical fruit, jasmine, herbal and cinnamon. Oily mouthfeel with generous alcohol on the tongue. Tropical fruit (guava, papaya, some very ripe pineapple) and eucalyptus hit first on the flavour followed by cinnamon and sweet honey (mostly on the retro nasal). The pepper tingle stays pleasingly on the tongue for a medium to long finish. Harmonious balance on the finish. There is a light presence of ash, so definitely good for those not looking for a “smoky” mezcal. Very satisfying overall impression. Another excellent mezcal at a great price point from Banhez'

SoloAgave: 'Really easy to sip – not much heat considering it is 94 proof. All the flavours are well-balanced yet subtle: herbal, sweet citrus, dry, and earthy. A really nice blend of some core tasting notes - can’t go wrong here if you lean towards the gentle/subtle/complex expressions.'

JDB: 'Aromas of fresh cut grass, a touch of earth and minerality, a deep well of herbal flavours, complex and yet approachable. A very good expression of Cuishe.'

Interesting fact: The families that plant the agave have known the land for centuries and take great care to ensure the fields are grown naturally and organically. This semi-cultivated method encourages wild plants, bats, insects and birds to populate the fields keeping the crop healthy and leaving a unique flavour impression
