Description

Banhez Ensamble – Espadín & Barril is a sustainable blend of cultivated agave (90%Espadín, 10% Barríl), it is mild, floral and fruity with notes of pineapple and banana. A percentage of mezcal from various families is sourced and blended to create a consistent, quality spirit. By working with members to prevent the over-harvesting of agaves the co-op provides sustainable income for all. Sweet and dry with a round body. The mild earthiness and smokey tones provide a backdrop to lime, banana, pineapple and pepper. This spirit can be served neat to sip or used to create cocktails.

BANHEZ means “bliss” and heritage and heart are the key components of this award-winning mezcal, Banhez. Founder, Francisco Javier Perez Cruz has formed a collective of individuals, families and communities in his home town of Oaxaca. They work together under one banner, a co-operative called UPADEC which produces Banhez. All involved, in some form, contribute to the cultivation of agave and the production of this traditionally made mezcal. UPADEC is not the only co-op in Oaxaca but it is one of the largest and certified non-profits, exemplifying an amazing, sustainable and culturally rich spirit. Francisco Javier Perez Cruz has worked to improve lives in his beautiful hometown, Oaxaca, Mexico, now and for generations to come

Zack Klamn: 'Nose: Leather. Light smoke. Red apple. Palate: Smooth entry. Banana cream. Pine needles. Smoky, peppermint as the vapory heat shows up late. Lingering brine aftertaste. Crazy good for the price point.'

t8ke: 'Super sweet – loaded with vanilla bean, cream cheese frosting, honey, toffee and salinity. Ash and satisfying woody smoke add a savoury contrast. Pepper. Delightful. It works so well in cocktails and is even more delightful neat. Strong work, Banhez.'

Jonny: 'Soft aromas of lavender, vanilla, and whole coffee beans. Very soft and light on the palate. Notes of banana and lemon. I like this and the price is good for cocktails.'

Cool Chile Rating: offering quality and value, we like the touch of barríl in the mix, making this mezcal a little different than a straight espadín, it is soft, floral and fruity, perfect as a house pour for sipping and cocktails.

Interesting fact: The families that plant the agave have known the land for centuries and take great care to ensure the fields are grown naturally and organically. This semi-cultivated method encourages wild plants, bats, insects and birds to populate the fields keeping the crop healthy and leaving a unique flavour impression

Maguey (Agave): espadín (A. angustfolia), barríl (A. karwinskii)

    Region: Ejutla, Oaxaca

    Litres produced:

    Oven type: wood-fired pit

    Extraction method: tahona wheel

    Water source:

Fermentation: open-air wooden fermentation tanks, wild yeasts

Still type: copper with refrescador a cooling system that allows for 2 distillations in 1 eight-hour pass, leaving the mezcal light in smoke and full of bright verdant flavours.
