Description

Founded in 1959 by tequila pioneer Don Jorge Salles Cuervo, El Tequileño was named to honour the people of Tequila, Mexico and has since gained a reputation for its products among consumers and customers.

Third-generation master distiller, Antonio Salles, still uses the same processes his grandfather devised to produce the brand's tequilas. The range is certified additive-free and all six expressions are made using sustainable techniques, with 98 per cent of residuals from the production process recycled and turned into fertiliser for new agave plants.

El Tequileño is the favoured tequila brand at La Capilla Cantina in Tequila, founded by the late Don Javier Delgado Corona and a regular fixture in the World's Top 50 Bars list.

Andy Bardon: 'Now this is fun! Loads of butterscotch, toffee, and caramel on the nose. Cooked agave lurks behind but is present. A pop of minerality, limestone, on the nose at the very end. Taste: butterscotch, then agave, then wood. Finish: Woody, but warm and long. Bravo, digging this on a snowy winter night!'

Remy Newland: 'Nose: Nice spicy nose marries nicely with the round ripe fruit aromas. Light oak, barrel spices, a faint yeast note and caramel. A sweet cider nuance. Flavour: This delivers an initial robust pop of pepper, cloves, cinnamon and anise, which is reined in by vanilla and caramel notes. This has a herbal note or two - perhaps cilantro.'

Ryan August: 'Reviewing side by side with the blanco, very happy to have the opportunity to check both out at once. Aroma: Sweet, soft agave. A light touch of vanilla that is getting a lot stronger as I let the tequila sit. The citrus note from the blanco is still there but it’s mixed with the vanilla in a very neat way. Little to no ethanol, notably. The faintest bit of butterscotch, and I keep thinking of the skin of a cantaloupe. Barrel spice and agave in the empty glass. Palate: Much more rounded hit of agave, not muted, but softer. Definitely sweeter than the blanco. There’s a tiny bit of vanilla that comes through, and the cinnamon note is much less pronounced for me. Interestingly the barrel ageing doesn’t seem to be contributing a lot of the typical barrel notes I expect, it seems to have mellowed everything and melded the flavours together. The citrus blends with the vanilla for me to the point where they’re almost indistinguishable. Very, very interesting.'

Region: the agaves are grown in the highlands the distillery is in the lowlands

    Age of agave when harvested:

Water Source: natural volcanic spring, only 1 of 4 tequilas that have access to this water source which makes for a very smooth tequila

Oven type: autoclave (high pressure), extra attention is taken to remove the cogollo of the agave before cooking, this is the bitter part of the plant which can negatively impact the final profile of the tequila.

    Extraction method: roller mill

Fermentation: cement tank, fermentation without fibres

    Still type: copper pot

Ageing: minimum of 8 months in American oak and blended with a small amount of Añejo aged in American oak
