Description
What everyone loves about Tapatío Añejo is that even though it is aged in bourbon barrels which can obliterate the agave nuances, the light touch of Carlos Camareno allows the agave to shine through in the aged tequila - a very well-respected añejo indeed!
Generations of expertise and fierce family pride make Tapatio a tequila that stands out from the crowd. This is the flagship brand of the renowned La Alteña Distillery, founded in Jalisco, Mexico, in 1937 by Don Felipe Camarena. Today, Tapatio is still owned by the Camarena family, and Don Felipe's grandson Carlos continues the legacy as master distiller.
Tapatio is crafted through an artisanal process and is double distilled to as close to bottling strength as possible, allowing the tequila to retain its natural character. Thanks to the Camarenas' respect for tradition and attention to detail, each tequila in the range is an expression of the authentic flavours of the agave plant.

Tequila MatchMaker Rating: 87
Remy Newman: 'Light in colour - heavy in aroma. Vibrant baked agave shines through, ripe berries, spices, a hint of pungency reminiscent of cheese, and a touch of earthiness. This tequila possesses one of the best aroma profiles, IMHO. Flavour: Spicy with black pepper and light oak. Agave is the star. Nice mouthfeel. Long pleasing finish with a balance of heat and sweetness. Mexican 38% version. Love this stuff!'
Jay McRaild: It’s almost impossible to find Añejo tequila that retains its agave roots but this is definitely a perfect example. The oak supplies nice complementary flavours but never steers you away from the core, this is great juice.'
Erica Booram: 'Aroma: Cooked agave still fairly strong on this for an Añejo. There is also some dried fruit and oak. Unique herbal / dark chocolate combo I haven't seen before. Taste: Agave is still very dominant here. There are also some notes of oak, orange, and some black peppery spiciness. This is medium-bodied and fairly oily. Finish: Long, somewhat hot, and spicy with agave sweetness and a mild oakiness.'
Cool Chile Rating: offering great quality and value for a house pour, Don Carlos makes his tequila with care and skill, he makes Ocho too, you can't go wrong with one of his tequilas. We like the Tapatío Añejo for sipping (delicious) and for short cocktails where you might normally use a brown spirit, like in a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. Value: £3.38 per 50ml
